What to know before you send bulk SMS
SMS marketing is regulated and billed per segment. Plan for these points before the first campaign goes out.
- Send marketing SMS only to contacts who opted in, and follow the opt-in rules of each country you send to
- Include a clear way to opt out, such as “Reply STOP”, and honor every opt-out
- Twilio bills each message per segment at its own rates: one segment holds 160 standard characters, or 70 when the text contains emoji or many non-Latin characters
- In the US, Twilio requires A2P 10DLC registration before you send from standard 10-digit numbers
- Respect local quiet hours and keep the sender name recognizable in the first words

FAQ
SMS campaigns FAQ
Costs, consent, message length and what happens when customers reply.
What is an SMS campaign?
An SMS campaign is one text message sent to a selected group of opted-in contacts at the same time, such as a sale announcement, an event invitation or a renewal reminder. In MonoChat the campaign is sent through your Twilio account and replies come back as conversations.
How much does it cost to send an SMS campaign with Twilio?
The SMS cost is charged by Twilio to your Twilio account at its per-segment rates, which depend on the destination country and the number type. Check Twilio’s pricing page for your countries. Your MonoChat plan is separate and covers the platform you send and reply from.
How many characters fit in one SMS?
A single SMS segment holds 160 standard GSM characters. If the text contains emoji or many non-Latin characters it switches to Unicode and a segment holds 70 characters. Longer messages are split into several segments, and each segment is billed.
Do I need consent to send marketing SMS?
Yes. Send marketing SMS only to people who opted in, include a way to opt out such as replying STOP, and follow the rules of each country you send to, for example the TCPA in the US or GDPR and ePrivacy rules in the EU. MonoChat leaves opted-out contacts out of later sends.
Can customers reply to an SMS campaign?
Yes. Replies arrive in the MonoChat team inbox as two-way SMS conversations. AI can answer common questions, keyword replies can trigger workflows, and anything else is assigned to the right agent.
Should I use SMS or WhatsApp for campaigns?
Use both where they fit. SMS reaches any phone without an app, while WhatsApp supports rich media and buttons. MonoChat runs both from the same contacts and workflows, so you can choose the channel per audience or use one as a fallback for the other.
