Telegram for business means using Telegram’s free tools, a Business account, a bot, a channel or a group, to answer customers, send updates and sell. For most companies the core is a Telegram bot: customers start it from a link, it answers and books around the clock, and it can send broadcasts to everyone who started it. A channel is the right tool for one-way news to a large audience.

The catch is that Telegram is built around user control. Bots cannot message anyone first, and anyone can stop a bot with one tap. This guide explains which Telegram tool fits which job, the rules that shape them, and how to run Telegram support as a team rather than from one person’s phone.

What Telegram offers businesses

Telegram has four building blocks that businesses use. They are often combined.

Business accountA personal account with business featuresSolo owners and small shopsYesOne account holder
BotAn automated account controlled through the Bot APISupport, bookings, orders, broadcastsYesThrough a connected inbox

Telegram Business accounts

Telegram announced Business accounts in March 2024. They add features to a regular account: opening hours, a location on a map, a custom start page for empty chats, quick replies, greeting messages for first-time contacts, away messages, and chat links that open a chat with a pre-filled message. Telegram said at launch that these features are available to Premium subscribers. You can also connect a bot that answers messages on your behalf.

A Business account works well when one person handles every chat. It does not give a team a shared view of conversations.

Telegram bots

A bot is a separate account you create with @BotFather. It has no phone number, shows a “bot” label instead of a “last seen” status, and is driven by software through the Bot API. Bots can show inline buttons and custom keyboards, respond to commands such as /start and /help, send media and files, take payments and broadcast messages.

Because a bot is not tied to one device, it is the natural way to connect Telegram to a shared inbox, an AI assistant and your back-office systems.

Channels and groups

Channels broadcast posts to subscribers, who cannot reply in the channel itself. Groups are open conversations among members. Both are useful for community and content, but neither is a private support line. Most businesses run a channel for news and a bot for one-to-one conversations, and link the two.

The rules Telegram bots follow

Plan your setup around these limits from Telegram’s official documentation:

  1. Bots cannot start conversations. A user has to message the bot or add it to a group first. You cannot import a phone list and message it.
  2. Broadcast speed is capped. Telegram’s bot FAQ says bots cannot broadcast more than about 30 messages per second. In one chat, avoid more than one message per second; in a group, a bot can send no more than 20 messages per minute.
  3. Paid broadcasts are for very large bots. A bot with at least 100,000 Stars and 100,000 monthly active users can enable paid broadcasts in @BotFather, up to 1,000 messages per second, at 0.1 Stars for each message above the free 30 per second.
  4. Users stay in control. Anyone can stop or block your bot. Relevant, well-timed messages are the only way to keep an audience.
  5. Privacy mode in groups. By default, a bot added to a group sees only the messages relevant to it.

Unlike the WhatsApp Business Platform, Telegram has no message templates, no 24-hour window and no per-message fees for normal bot traffic. That makes it cheap to run, but it also means there is no approval step protecting you from sending something people do not want. Treat consent as seriously as you would on WhatsApp. Our guide to WhatsApp opt-in has wording that works on any channel.

Telegram vs WhatsApp for customer messaging

Many businesses run both. The right mix depends on where your customers are and what you need to send.

How to use Telegram for customer support

A good Telegram support setup has three layers: a bot that greets and triages, answers for common questions, and a person for everything else.

Greet and route with buttons

Start every chat with a short welcome and a few choices. Buttons are faster than typing and tell you what the customer wants.

Hi, welcome to Nova Store. What can we help you with?

[Track my order] [Product question]
[Returns] [Talk to a person]

Answer common questions automatically

Delivery times, opening hours, prices and policies make up a large share of support chats. An AI assistant grounded in your own content can answer them in the customer’s language, day and night. The key is that it answers from your documents, not from general knowledge. Our guide to building a chatbot knowledge base covers how to prepare that content.

Hand over to a person with context

When the question is complex or the customer asks for a person, the bot should say so and pass the chat on with its history:

Thanks, I’m passing this to our support team now. Leyla will reply here within business hours and can see everything you’ve told me.

Write down the triggers for escalation, such as refunds, complaints and repeated “I don’t understand” replies. The guide to AI-to-human handoff has rules and message templates you can adapt.

How to send Telegram broadcasts that people welcome

A bot broadcast lands in each subscriber’s private chat with your bot, which feels more personal than a channel post. Use that carefully.

  • Segment. Send the autumn collection to people who bought clothing, not to everyone.
  • Make it actionable. Add one or two buttons: “Shop the collection”, “Ask a question”.
  • Time it. Send when your audience is active, and respect quiet hours.
  • Offer a way out. Add an unsubscribe button or command, tag the contact, and exclude that tag from every future segment.
  • Be ready for replies. Every broadcast starts conversations, so plan who answers them.

Taking bookings and payments on Telegram

Telegram bots can run reservation flows and send invoices. Telegram’s payments documentation says Telegram does not collect payment information and takes no commission: payments for physical goods and services run through third-party providers, which handle card details. Digital goods and services sold in a bot must be paid in Telegram Stars.

For bookings, a short guided flow works best:

Bot: Which day suits you? [Thu 11:00] [Fri 16:30]
Customer: Fri 16:30
Bot: Booked: Dermatology, Friday 16:30. I'll remind you the day before.

If you take payment links across several channels, see our guide to accepting payments in chat.

How to grow your Telegram audience

Because bots cannot message first, every subscriber has to arrive through an entry point:

  • Your t.me link on your website, email signature and social profiles
  • A QR code on packaging, receipts and in your store
  • A pinned post in your Telegram channel that links to the bot
  • A “Message us on Telegram” button next to your other chat options

Tell people what they get by starting the bot, such as order updates, faster support or subscriber offers.

How to run Telegram for business with MonoChat

MonoChat connects your Telegram bot to the same shared team inbox you use for WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, web chat and SMS.

  • Connect in minutes. Create a bot with @BotFather, copy the bot token and paste it into MonoChat. Telegram messages to your bot then arrive in the inbox. See the Telegram bot overview.
  • Answer as a team. Several agents work from one inbox, assign conversations, see each customer’s history and keep response SLAs. Smart routing can assign chats by channel, skill, workload and priority.
  • Let AI handle the first reply. The Telegram AI chatbot answers from your own PDFs, web pages and FAQs in the AI knowledge base, replies in the customer’s language, and mixes free-text answers with inline buttons and commands. You choose the model: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or your own, with your own API keys.
  • Hand over cleanly. When a question needs a person, the chat goes to the right agent with the full history, and the agent replies through the same bot.
  • Send broadcasts. Telegram broadcasts go to segments built from tags, contact attributes and conversation history, with images, files and inline buttons. You can send now or schedule, and every reply comes back to the inbox as a conversation. Analytics show delivery and responses.
  • Automate the rest. Workflow automation turns button taps into actions, such as confirming a booking, tagging a lead or opening a support request.

If you want an assistant running quickly, MonoChat Start reads your website, builds the knowledge for you and answers on Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram or your website chat.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Telegram good for business?

Yes, especially if your customers already use Telegram. A bot can answer questions, take bookings and send updates to everyone who started it, and a channel can broadcast news to an unlimited audience. The main limit is that bots cannot message people first, so you grow your audience with links and QR codes.

What is the difference between a Telegram Business account and a Telegram bot?

A Business account is a personal Telegram account with business features such as opening hours, a location, quick replies, greeting and away messages. A bot is a separate account you create with @BotFather and control through the Bot API, which makes it the better fit for automation, broadcasts and connecting a team inbox.

Can a Telegram bot send messages to customers first?

No. Telegram bots cannot start conversations. A person must message the bot, press Start or add it to a group before the bot can reply or include them in a broadcast. Share your t.me link or a QR code so customers can open the chat.

How many messages can a Telegram bot send per second?

Telegram's bot FAQ says bots cannot broadcast more than about 30 messages per second, should avoid more than one message per second in a single chat, and can send no more than 20 messages per minute in a group. Large bots that meet Telegram's thresholds can enable paid broadcasts of up to 1,000 messages per second.

Can several agents answer one Telegram bot?

Not inside the Telegram app itself, because a bot is controlled through the API rather than logged in on a phone. When you connect the bot token to a shared inbox such as MonoChat, every incoming chat appears there and several agents can assign, answer and hand over conversations through the same bot.

Does Telegram charge businesses for messages?

Bots message the users who started them at no cost by default. Telegram only charges for paid broadcasts above the free speed limit, at 0.1 Stars per extra message. Your messaging platform may count outgoing messages toward its own plan.
