WhatsApp interactive messages are API messages with tappable elements: reply buttons, list menus, link buttons, carousels of cards, product messages and in-chat forms called WhatsApp Flows. Instead of typing, the customer taps an option, and your system gets a clean, structured answer it can act on. You can send them freely inside the 24-hour customer service window; outside it, you use approved templates that carry buttons.
They matter because typing on a phone is effort. A customer who can tap “Reschedule” finishes the task; a customer who has to type it may not reply at all. This guide covers every interactive type on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the limits Meta sets, sample messages you can adapt, and how to choose between them.
What types of WhatsApp interactive messages are there?
Meta’s documentation lists several interactive message types you can send during an open customer service window. Here they are side by side:
| Type | What the customer sees | Key limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reply buttons | Up to 3 buttons under the message | Button title up to 20 characters | Yes/no, confirm/cancel, 2 to 3 choices |
| List message | One button that opens a menu | Up to 10 rows in up to 10 sections; row title 24 characters, description 72 | Menus, branches, time slots, topics |
| CTA URL button | One button that opens a link | One URL per message | Payment links, tracking pages, documents |
| Location request | A button that opens location sharing | Body text plus the button | Delivery, nearest store, roadside help |
| Media carousel | 2 to 10 swipeable cards with image or video | Same button type and count on every card | Products, packages, rooms, cars |
| Product messages | One product, several products or your catalog | Multi-product messages show up to 30 products | Shopping inside the chat |
| Flow message | A button that opens a multi-screen form | Built with WhatsApp Flows | Bookings, sign-ups, applications, surveys |
| Voice call button | A button that starts a WhatsApp call to you | Requires WhatsApp Business calling | Moving from chat to a call |
Each type returns the customer’s choice to your webhook with an ID you define, so your bot, workflow or CRM knows exactly what was picked without parsing text.
Reply buttons: the fastest way to get an answer
Reply buttons are the simplest interactive message: body text, an optional header (text, image, video or document), an optional footer and up to 3 buttons. Meta caps each button title at 20 characters, and titles must be unique within a message.
Use them when there are two or three clear answers.
Hi Lena, your table for 4 at Olive & Thyme is booked for Friday at 8:00 PM.
[Confirm] [Change time] [Cancel]
Tips that make reply buttons work:
- Put the action in the button, not the body. “Confirm” beats “Yes”.
- Keep the most common choice first. Most people tap the first button.
- Always offer a way to reach a person. A “Talk to us” option prevents frustration when none of the choices fit.
List messages: menus with up to 10 options
A list message shows one button, such as “See options”, that opens a menu. Meta allows up to 10 rows in total, grouped in up to 10 sections. Each row has a title of up to 24 characters and an optional description of up to 72 characters. The header, if you add one, can only be text.
Header: Book a service
Body: Which service would you like to book? Prices include a free consultation.
Button: Choose a service
Section: Hair
- Women's cut | 45 min, from $40
- Men's cut | 30 min, from $25
Section: Color
- Full color | 2 hrs, from $90
- Highlights | 2.5 hrs, from $120
Lists are the right pick for main menus, store or branch selection, available time slots and support topics. If you find yourself needing more than 10 rows, split the decision into two steps (for example, choose a day, then a time) or move to a Flow.
CTA URL buttons and location requests
A CTA URL button message maps a single button to a link, so the customer sees “Pay now” or “Track order” instead of a long URL in the text.
Your order #4821 has shipped and should arrive on Thursday.
[Track your parcel]
A location request message shows body text and a button that opens WhatsApp’s location-sharing screen. The customer sends a pin, and you get coordinates back. It is useful for delivery addresses, finding the nearest branch or sending help to the right place.
Carousels and product messages
A media carousel is a single message with 2 to 10 horizontally scrolling cards. Each card has an image or video header, optional card text of up to 160 characters, and buttons. Meta requires every card to use the same button type and the same number of buttons, and button labels are limited to 20 characters.
Body: Three rooms are still free for your dates (June 12 to 15).
Card 1: Garden Double, breakfast included [Book this room]
Card 2: Sea View Double, balcony [Book this room]
Card 3: Family Suite, sleeps 4 [Book this room]
If you sell from a Meta catalog, product messages pull items directly from it. A single-product message shows one item with its image, title and price; a multi-product message shows up to 30 products in sections; a catalog message opens your full catalog in WhatsApp.
Carousels can also be sent as approved carousel templates outside the service window. Meta treats media card carousel templates as marketing templates, with 2 to 10 cards and up to two buttons per card. See our carousel message glossary entry for a quick definition.
WhatsApp Flows: forms inside the chat
When a task needs more than one answer, such as a booking, an application or a survey, a WhatsApp Flow is the better tool. The customer taps a button and a multi-screen form opens on top of the chat, with fields, dropdowns, date pickers and checkboxes. When they submit, the answers come back in one structured payload.
You can send a Flow in two ways:
- Inside the service window as an interactive Flow message with a call-to-action button. Meta advises keeping that button text to 30 characters or less.
- Outside the window as an approved template with a Flow button.
Meta requires a verified business with good message quality to send Flows. For a full booking example, see our guide to WhatsApp appointment booking.
Interactive messages inside vs. outside the 24-hour window
This is the rule that trips most teams up. Meta’s documentation is clear: when the customer service window closes, you can only send approved template messages. Free-form interactive messages (reply buttons, lists, carousels, Flow messages) are for conversations the customer has opened in the last 24 hours.
Templates have their own interactive options:
| Template button | Limit or note | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Quick reply | Up to 10 | ”Confirm”, “Reschedule”, “Stop promotions” |
| URL | Up to 2 | Tracking page, payment link |
| Phone number | 1 | Call the store |
| Copy code | 1 | Discount or coupon code |
| Flow | Opens a published Flow | Open a booking or sign-up form |
| Voice call | Used with WhatsApp calling | Call the business on WhatsApp |
Meta allows up to 10 buttons in total on a template, and template button labels can be up to 25 characters. Our template message examples include ready-to-adapt wording for each category.
How to choose the right interactive message
A simple decision path:
- Two or three possible answers? Use reply buttons.
- Four to ten options? Use a list message.
- The next step happens on a web page? Use a CTA URL button.
- Customers need to compare things visually? Use a carousel or product message.
- You need several answers at once (name, date, address)? Use a WhatsApp Flow.
- The window has closed? Use a template with quick reply, URL, Flow or carousel buttons.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Too many steps. Three menus in a row feel like a phone tree. Collapse steps or use a Flow.
- Dead ends. Every interactive message should lead somewhere, including to a human.
- Ignoring typed answers. Some customers will type “the second one” instead of tapping. A chatbot or AI assistant should understand both.
- Vague labels. “Option 1” tells the customer nothing. Use the action or the item name.
How to send WhatsApp interactive messages with MonoChat
In MonoChat you build interactive journeys without writing API calls, and every reply lands in the same shared team inbox.
- Buttons and branches in workflows. The visual workflow automation builder starts flows from messages, button taps and form submits, then branches on what the customer chose. A “Change time” tap can open a new set of slots, while “Talk to us” hands the conversation to an agent.
- WhatsApp Flows with live data. With WhatsApp Flows in MonoChat you design forms, surveys and booking steps, either with fixed fields or with live options such as products, time slots and locations loaded from your systems. You can share a flow from a template message, a chatbot reply or an automation, and MonoChat sends each submission to your CRM, helpdesk or API.
- Carousels from your catalog. Carousel messages can use fixed cards for a campaign or load products, packages, prices and availability from your store or API. The AI assistant can pick cards that match what the customer asked for, and each tap continues to checkout, a payment link, a booking or an agent.
- Templates with buttons. You create template messages with variables, media and buttons, submit them to Meta for approval from MonoChat and reuse them in broadcasts or automations once approved.
- An AI chatbot that understands taps and text. A WhatsApp chatbot can answer the customers who type instead of tapping, then return them to the same journey.
