Best WhatsApp AI agents in 2026: 10 platforms compared

Every customer messaging platform now sells an AI agent for WhatsApp, but they differ a lot in what the AI can actually do, which channels it covers and how you pay for it. We compared ten of them, including our own, on the criteria that matter once real customers start writing.

The best WhatsApp AI agent depends on three things: what you need the AI to do (answer only, or also look things up, book and qualify), how many channels and numbers it has to cover, and how its AI usage is billed once volume grows. Since October 1, 2026, Meta also charges for service replies on the WhatsApp Business Platform, so the total cost of an AI reply now matters more than ever.

We compared ten platforms that offer an AI agent for WhatsApp in October 2026. MonoChat is our own product, so we put it first and say so; for every other tool we used the vendor’s own pricing pages and documentation, linked in the sources at the end.

How we compared them

We looked at five things that decide whether an AI agent keeps working once real customers write in:

  1. Actions, not just answers. Can the AI call your systems (orders, bookings, CRM, stock) or only reply with text?
  2. Grounding and control. Does it answer from your own content, and can you choose and limit the model?
  3. Handover. Does it pass the chat to the right person with the full context, and can you decide when?
  4. Channels and numbers. One AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok and web chat, or a separate setup per channel?
  5. Cost at scale. Seats, credits, per resolution, per conversation or tokens: how does the bill grow when volume doubles?

1. MonoChat

Best for: teams that run WhatsApp together with Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram and web chat, and want an AI agent that takes real actions on the model of their choice.

MonoChat is an AI-first customer messaging platform and an official Meta Business Partner. Its AI assistants answer from an AI knowledge base built from your documents and web pages, and use AI function tools, custom functions and MCP to call your own systems: look up an order, check availability, create a booking or a payment link. You choose the model, from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and others to your own, through custom LLMs.

  • Channels: WhatsApp Business API, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, web chat, Twilio SMS and SIP voice in one inbox.
  • Handover: the conversation moves to the right agent or team with its full history, with routing and SLAs from the multi-agent call center.
  • Pricing: Basic is free with 1,000 outgoing messages a month; Growth is $120/month with 2 agents, 1 channel and 100,000 outgoing messages. With your own AI keys, MonoChat adds no AI fee or markup; MonoChat AI APIs are billed by tokens. Enterprise adds on-premises deployment.
  • Limitations: extra channels and agents on Growth cost $30/month each; the most advanced setups (custom functions, integrations) take some configuration, which MonoChat’s development packs can cover.

In practice: Koton’s AI assistant has run more than 300,000 actions against its own systems on WhatsApp, Tatilox lets travellers search and filter stays in chat with close to 100,000 AI actions, and Viaport Marina answers visitors on three channels with AI.

2. Meta Business Agent

Best for: a business with one WhatsApp number that wants Meta’s native agent and is in an eligible vertical and country.

Meta’s own AI agent became available globally for WhatsApp Business and Instagram in June 2026. It answers from your business information, FAQs, website and files, can take actions through your own APIs and webhooks, such as confirming a booking or a payment, and hands conversations off to and from your app.

  • Pricing: in the WhatsApp Business app, smaller businesses get it with some subscription tiers. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges Business Agent messages at a single global rate of $2.00 per million tokens from August 1, 2026; a message answered by Meta’s agent pays the token rate instead of the service-message rate.
  • Limitations: finance, government, health, alcohol, gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony are excluded; the business must be in an authorised country; a number that already runs another authorised AI agent cannot use it. It is an agent, not an inbox: you still need a team tool for handover.

3. respond.io

Best for: mid-market B2C companies with several WhatsApp numbers and channels that want the AI to update contact records and assign leads.

respond.io’s AI Agents answer from approved knowledge, update fields, assign and close conversations, trigger workflows, read images and voice notes, and hand over with context. Voice AI answers WhatsApp and VoIP calls in 30+ languages.

  • Channels: WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, Viber, Telegram, LINE, email, web chat, SMS and VoIP.
  • Pricing: AI Agents start on Growth at $199/month ($159 billed annually) for 1,000 monthly active contacts. AI uses credits (2–5 per response, about 70 per voice minute); extra credits cost $15 per 1,000, capped at 200% of the allowance.
  • Limitations: external API calls (HTTP requests) and voice need the Advanced plan ($349/month); price rises with monthly active contacts.

4. Wati (Astra)

Best for: small and mid-sized businesses that are WhatsApp-first and want a simple setup.

Astra is Wati’s AI agent. It answers FAQs, qualifies leads, hands over to the team inbox and offers a voice agent; API actions (webhooks, REST) and Salesforce are on the Business plan.

  • Pricing: Astra is a separate subscription on top of Wati: Pro $99/month with 5,000 credits, Business $399/month with 25,000 credits. One simple reply or action uses 1 credit, a rich one 3, a voice minute 5; extra credits are $20 per 1,000.
  • Limitations: two subscriptions to manage; API actions only on Business; training data capped at 50–100 MB per agent.

5. SleekFlow

Best for: retail and service teams that want AI agents inside a visual flow builder.

SleekFlow’s AgentFlow AI agents answer from a knowledge base, score and qualify leads, follow entry, exit and handoff rules, and can use custom API integrations to fetch data, create payment links or look up CRM records.

  • Pricing: AI agents start on Pro at $109/month for 500 monthly active contacts; “AI agents with integrations” are on Premium at $279/month. WhatsApp number hosting is $15/month per number. How AI usage itself is billed is not shown on the pricing page.
  • Limitations: integrations are tied to Premium, and custom API access may need to be enabled by your customer success manager.

6. Zendesk AI agents

Best for: support organisations that already run on Zendesk.

Zendesk lets you build an AI agent once and deploy it to web, mobile and social channels, including WhatsApp, with integrations, actions and 80+ languages.

  • Pricing: Suite Team is $55 per agent/month billed annually ($69 monthly) with 5 automated resolutions per agent included; after that each resolution costs $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.
  • Limitations: seat-based plus per-resolution pricing; built around ticket deflection rather than sales or bookings.

7. Intercom Fin

Best for: B2C and SaaS support teams already on Intercom.

Fin answers on WhatsApp with the same knowledge, workflows and data as on other channels, transcribes voice notes, sends templates and quick replies, can take actions through APIs, data connectors and MCP, and hands off with context.

  • Pricing: seats from $29/month (Essential), plus Fin from $0.99 per outcome, charged once per conversation where Fin delivers value. WhatsApp traffic is billed on top.
  • Limitations: every outcome is billed, and the exact definition of an outcome is not public.

8. Gorgias AI Agent

Best for: Shopify stores handling order questions on WhatsApp.

Gorgias’ AI Agent answers with your knowledge and tone of voice and verifies shoppers by email or order number; WhatsApp support is in open beta.

  • Pricing: from $40/month (helpdesk Starter plus AI Agent with 30 automated interactions); each automated interaction costs $0.85–$1.00 depending on the plan.
  • Limitations: requires Shopify, replies only inside the 24-hour window, and sends cancellations and address changes to people because one-time passcodes are not yet supported on WhatsApp.

9. Kommo

Best for: sales teams that want a CRM pipeline with an AI agent in front.

Kommo’s AI agent learns from files, URLs and synced store catalogues, qualifies leads on budget, needs and timeline, and hands over with an optional summary. Its actions are limited to a fixed set.

  • Pricing: Advanced is $35 per user/month with up to 3 AI agents; Pro is $45 per user/month. Plans require a 6-month minimum term, and AI runs on per-user credits.
  • Limitations: the AI cannot move pipeline stages or fill fields beyond its fixed actions; no monthly billing.

10. Trengo

Best for: European customer service teams that want AI on WhatsApp and voice.

Trengo’s AI Agent is trained on your help centre and documents, supports Shopify order lookups and returns, and follows escalation rules. Third-party AI actions (external APIs) are on Pro and Enterprise.

  • Pricing: Boost is €299/month billed annually (€349 monthly) for 10 users; conversations with AI carry a surcharge of €0.25–€0.30 each.
  • Limitations: high entry price, and no external API actions on Boost.

What a WhatsApp AI reply really costs in 2026

Two bills add up for every AI reply:

  1. Meta’s WhatsApp fee. Since October 1, 2026, service messages, the replies you send inside the customer service window, are charged per message after the first 1,000 per business number each month, at the same rate as utility messages in that market. Replies written by Meta Business Agent are charged by tokens instead. See our WhatsApp API pricing guide for the rates.
  2. The platform’s AI fee. Credits, per-resolution or per-outcome fees, per-conversation surcharges, or token prices. Per-resolution pricing looks simple, but at $1–$2 per conversation it can cost more than the model itself; credits and tokens track usage more closely.

Before you choose, take last month’s WhatsApp conversations and price them on each model: how many would the AI handle, and what would each one cost?

How to choose

  • You run one WhatsApp number and only need answers: Meta Business Agent, if your vertical and country are eligible.
  • Your team already lives in a helpdesk: Zendesk AI agents or Intercom Fin.
  • You sell on Shopify and most questions are about orders: Gorgias.
  • You sell through a pipeline and want a CRM first: Kommo.
  • WhatsApp is one of several channels, and the AI needs to take real actions in your systems: a messaging-first platform such as MonoChat or respond.io. MonoChat adds the choice of model, no AI markup on your own keys, and on-premises deployment for organisations that need to keep data on their own servers.

Whichever you choose, keep the AI inside your business: since January 2026 WhatsApp only allows AI that serves your own customers, not a general-purpose assistant. Our WhatsApp AI chatbot policy guide explains what is allowed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a WhatsApp AI agent?

A WhatsApp AI agent is an AI assistant connected to your WhatsApp Business number that answers customers from your own content and can take actions, such as looking up an order, booking an appointment, qualifying a lead or handing the chat to a person. It differs from a rule-based chatbot because it understands free text instead of following a fixed menu.

Are AI agents allowed on WhatsApp Business?

Yes. Since January 15, 2026, WhatsApp's Business Solution Terms stop AI providers from offering a general-purpose AI assistant as the main product on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Businesses that use AI to serve their own customers, for example to answer questions, book appointments or track orders, are not affected.

How much does a WhatsApp AI agent cost?

You pay two things: the platform's AI fee and Meta's WhatsApp fees. Platforms bill AI in different ways: credits (respond.io, Wati Astra, Kommo), a fee per resolution or outcome (Zendesk, Intercom Fin, Gorgias), a surcharge per conversation (Trengo), or your own AI provider's token prices with no markup (MonoChat with your own keys). On top of that, Meta charges per message; since October 1, 2026 service replies are charged too, after the first 1,000 per business number each month.

What is Meta Business Agent?

Meta Business Agent is Meta's own AI agent for WhatsApp Business and Instagram, available globally since June 2026. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta charges its messages at $2.00 per million tokens from August 1, 2026. It excludes some verticals, such as finance, government and health, and a number that already runs another AI agent cannot use it.

Can one AI agent work across WhatsApp, Instagram and other channels?

On most platforms in this list, yes, but coverage differs. MonoChat, respond.io and SleekFlow run the same AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok and web chat in one inbox; helpdesks such as Zendesk and Intercom cover their own channel set; Gorgias is built around Shopify stores.

Should I use my helpdesk's AI or a dedicated messaging platform?

If your team already lives in Zendesk or Intercom and most requests are support tickets, their AI agents fit naturally. If WhatsApp and social messaging are your main channels, and you also sell, book or run campaigns there, a messaging-first platform usually covers more of the journey in one place.
