Meta business verification is the process Meta uses to confirm that your business portfolio (formerly Business Manager) belongs to a real, registered business. A portfolio admin enters the legal business name, address, phone number and website, confirms their connection to the business by email, phone or another method, and uploads official documents if Meta cannot match the business automatically. For the WhatsApp Business API, a verified business raises your messaging limit, lets you register more phone numbers and is required for the blue tick.
You do not need it to send your first WhatsApp messages, but most growing businesses get there within weeks. This guide explains what verification unlocks, what to prepare, the steps, the reasons applications get rejected and how it fits into your WhatsApp setup.
What is Meta business verification?
Business verification is a one-time identity check on your business portfolio, the account that owns your Facebook Page, Instagram account, ad accounts and WhatsApp Business accounts. Once the portfolio is verified, every asset in it benefits.
It is easy to confuse with other “verified” labels on Meta’s platforms:
| Term | What it is | Cost | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business verification | Meta confirms your business portfolio belongs to a registered business | Free | ”Verified” status in your business portfolio settings |
| Official Business Account (OBA) | Blue tick for a phone number on the WhatsApp Business API | No request fee from Meta | Next to the business name in WhatsApp |
| Meta Verified for Business | Paid subscription with a badge and extra account features | Monthly subscription | WhatsApp Business app, Facebook and Instagram profiles |
| Display name approval | Meta reviews the name shown for your WhatsApp number | Free | Your WhatsApp profile |
Business verification sits underneath the others. For a full comparison of the badges, read our guide to the WhatsApp blue tick.
Why business verification matters for the WhatsApp API
A higher messaging limit
Meta’s messaging limit caps how many unique customers your business portfolio can reach with template messages outside the customer service window in a rolling 24 hours. New portfolios start at 250. To get to 2,000, Meta lists three paths:
- Verify your business.
- Have your partner verify your business, if a partner onboarded you.
- Send 2,000 delivered messages outside customer service windows to unique numbers within 30 days, using templates with a high quality rating.
After the first increase, Meta raises your limit automatically to 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited, based on message quality and how much of your current limit you use. Replies to customers who write to you first are not limited.
More phone numbers
A new business portfolio can register two business phone numbers. Meta raises the cap to 20 when the business is verified or reaches the 2,000 messaging limit. If you run separate numbers for sales, support or several locations, verification is the quickest way to add them.
The blue tick
Meta’s requirements for Official Business Account status include a verified business portfolio, two-step verification on the number and an approved display name. Without verification, you cannot request the badge.
Moving your number later
Meta requires a verified business before a registered number can be migrated to a new WhatsApp Business account, for example when you change provider. See our guide to WhatsApp number migration.
Without verification vs with verification
| Unverified portfolio | Verified portfolio | |
|---|---|---|
| Send and receive WhatsApp messages | Yes | Yes |
| Messaging limit to start | 250 unique customers per rolling 24 hours | Eligible for 2,000, then automatic scaling |
| Registered phone numbers | 2 | 20 |
| Official Business Account request | Not eligible | Eligible, if other requirements are met |
| Migrate the number to a new provider | Not eligible | Eligible, if other requirements are met |
What you need before you start
Most rejections happen because details do not match. Spend ten minutes on this list first.
- Admin access. Only an admin of the business portfolio can complete verification.
- Your exact legal business name, as it appears on your registration documents, including the legal suffix (Ltd, LLC, GmbH and so on).
- Your registered address and a business phone number that match official records.
- A working website on your own domain that shows the business name and ideally the same address or phone number. A page that is under construction makes verification harder.
- A business email address on that domain, if you plan to confirm by email.
- Official documents, in case Meta asks for them. Typical examples are a business registration or incorporation certificate, a business license or a tax registration certificate. A utility bill or bank statement in the business name can support the address. Accepted documents vary by country, so check the list Meta shows you.
- Clear scans or photos: full pages, legible, not expired and not cropped.
Using a trading name that is different from your legal name? Verify with the legal name, and make sure your website or documents connect the two.
How to verify your business with Meta, step by step
The screens change from time to time, but the flow follows the same steps.
1. Open your business portfolio settings
Log in to Meta Business Suite or Business settings as a portfolio admin and open the business verification option. Depending on your account, you find it under Security Center or in the business info section of your settings. If you started from a WhatsApp onboarding or a Meta app, the flow may open from there instead.
2. Enter your business details
Provide the business name, address, phone number, email and website. Choose the country where the business is registered. Meta may show matching businesses from public records; pick yours if it appears.
3. Confirm your connection to the business
Choose how Meta contacts you to confirm you belong to the business, such as an email to an address on your business domain, a phone call or a text message to your business number. Enter the code you receive.
4. Upload documents if Meta asks
If Meta cannot find your business in public records, or the details do not match, it asks for documents. Upload ones that show the same legal name, and the address or phone number you entered.
5. Wait for the review
Meta reviews the submission and updates the verification status in your portfolio settings. Review time varies, so start before you need the higher limits. You can keep using the WhatsApp API at the starting limits while it runs.
6. Check that WhatsApp picked it up
Once your portfolio shows as verified, check your messaging limit and phone number cap in WhatsApp Manager. Meta says that when an increase to 2,000 is approved, it applies immediately.
Why Meta business verification gets rejected
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Name on the form differs from the documents | Use the exact legal name, including the suffix |
| Address or phone number does not match | Use the details on your registration documents, or add a document that shows the current ones |
| Website does not show the business | Add the legal name and contact details to the site, usually in the footer or contact page |
| Email on a free webmail domain | Use an address on your business domain, or choose phone confirmation |
| Document expired, cropped or blurry | Upload a current, full-page, readable scan |
| Unsupported document | Use an official registration, license or tax document rather than invoices or marketing material |
| Portfolio has a history of policy issues | Resolve restrictions first; see WhatsApp Business account banned |
After a rejection, correct the details so every source says the same thing, then resubmit. Repeating an identical submission rarely changes the result.
How to verify your business and launch WhatsApp in MonoChat
MonoChat is an official Meta Business Partner that connects your own WhatsApp Business account directly to Meta’s Cloud API. Your business portfolio, number and verification stay yours, and Meta bills you directly for messages. You do not need to wait for verification to start.
1. Connect WhatsApp and start at the starting limits
Create a free account at app.monochat.ai. The Basic plan includes one agent and one channel; other plans are on the pricing page. Connect your WhatsApp Business API number, or keep the WhatsApp Business app on it with coexistence. MonoChat guides you through connecting your business account, setting up the number and creating templates. Onboarding time depends on your Meta account status and business verification.
2. Verify your business in parallel
Use the checklist above and submit verification in your business portfolio while your team answers customers in the unified team inbox. Incoming chats and replies inside the customer service window are not affected by the messaging limit.
3. Build quality before you scale
Create and submit template messages and send them to opted-in customers. A first utility template might look like this:
Hi {{1}}, your appointment at {{2}} is confirmed for {{3}}. Reply here if you need to change it.
High-quality templates protect your quality rating, which Meta uses for automatic limit increases. Our guide to WhatsApp template message examples has more ready-to-adapt wording.
4. Scale campaigns once verified
When your portfolio is verified and your limit rises, send larger campaigns with bulk messaging, estimate costs with the bulk messaging calculator and request the blue tick in WhatsApp Manager when you meet Meta’s requirements.
If you are choosing a platform at the same stage, our guide to what a Meta Business Partner is explains what the badge means.
