A Click-to-Messenger ad is a Facebook or Instagram ad that opens a Messenger conversation with your Page when someone taps it, instead of sending them to a website. An Instagram click-to-DM ad (Meta calls it an ad that clicks to Instagram Direct) does the same thing inside Instagram. You set the greeting and suggested questions in Ads Manager, and the person lands in a chat with your business, ready to ask.
The ad is the easy part. What decides whether the budget pays off is what happens in the first minute of the conversation, which Meta rules apply afterwards, and whether you can tell which ad produced which sale. This guide covers all three.
How do Click-to-Messenger ads work?
The journey has four steps:
- The person sees the ad in a Facebook or Instagram placement, with a button such as “Send message”.
- They tap it and a chat opens with a prefilled greeting (Meta’s default is “Hello! Can I get more info on this?”) or a list of questions you wrote.
- They send the message. It reaches your Page or Instagram account together with referral data about the ad.
- Your business replies in the same thread, by a person, a flow or an AI assistant.
Compared with a website click, the person never leaves the app, and they have already told you what they want in their first message. Compared with a lead form, you can answer questions and qualify them in real time.
Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp?
Meta lets ads open several messaging destinations, and it also offers multi-destination ads that pick the app where a person is most likely to respond. The differences matter once the chat starts.
| Click-to-Messenger | Click-to-Instagram Direct | Click-to-WhatsApp | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conversation lives in | Your Facebook Page’s Messenger | Your Instagram professional account | Your WhatsApp Business number |
| Reply window | 24 hours from the person’s last message | 24 hours from the person’s last message | 24-hour customer service window, plus a 72-hour free entry point window if you reply in time |
| Later outreach | Marketing messages to subscribers, utility messages, Sponsored Messages | Human agent tag for manual replies | Approved template messages to opted-in contacts |
| Often fits | Audiences active on Facebook, local services | Visual products, creator-led brands | Markets where WhatsApp is the default chat app, long sales cycles |
If WhatsApp is your main channel, our guide to Click-to-WhatsApp ads covers that side in detail.
How to set up a Click-to-Messenger or click-to-DM ad
You build the ad in Meta Ads Manager. The exact menu labels change from time to time, but the decisions stay the same.
- Prepare the destination. Make sure your Facebook Page has messaging turned on, and for Instagram, that you use a professional account linked to the Page.
- Create the campaign. Choose an objective that supports messaging destinations, such as Engagement or Sales.
- Pick the message destination. In the ad set, choose Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, or a combination.
- Write the creative. One clear product or offer per ad works better than a catalog of everything.
- Set the message template. Write the greeting and up to a few suggested questions people can tap. Meta’s API limits show the scale: an ice breaker question title can be up to 80 characters, and its response or the message text up to 300.
- Add a ref value if you can. A short code per ad or campaign (letters, digits,
-,_and=) comes back with the first message and makes attribution easier. - Connect your inbox before launch. The first conversations arrive within minutes of approval. If nobody, and nothing, is ready to answer, you pay for chats that go cold.
Meta also supports welcome message flows from a messaging partner app: a sequence of messages, buttons and quick replies that you attach to Click-to-Messenger and click-to-Instagram Direct ads, selected in the ad’s message template section.
Write suggested questions that start the right flow
Suggested questions are the most underused part of a messaging ad. Each one is a door into a different conversation, so write them as the three or four reasons people actually buy:
Greeting: Hi! Want to know more about the Oslo sofa?
Questions:
- What does it cost with delivery?
- Can I get fabric samples?
- Is it in stock in grey?
- I'd like to talk to a designer
Each question should start a matching path in your automation: price and delivery, a sample request, a stock check, or a handover to a person.
What should the first reply say?
The first reply decides whether the person stays. A few rules that work across industries:
- Answer the question they tapped. If they asked about price, the first line contains the price.
- Reference the ad. “The linen blazer from our ad” tells them they are in the right place.
- End with one question or two to three buttons. You want a reply, because each reply keeps the conversation open.
- Say who is answering. If it is automated, say so where the law requires it, and offer a way to reach a person.
- Keep it short. Two or three lines on a phone screen.
A first reply that works:
Hi! The Oslo 3-seat sofa from our ad is $1,290 with free delivery in the city. It comes in four fabrics. What would you like to know first? [Price and delivery] [Fabric samples] [Talk to a designer]
One that usually doesn’t:
Thank you for contacting us. An agent will be with you shortly.
Three ad conversation flows you can copy
1. Lead qualification for high-value services
For property, cars, education or B2B, ask no more than three questions, save each answer, and route by intent.
Bot: Welcome! To show you the right flats, what is your budget?
[Under 250k] [250k-400k] [Over 400k]
User: 250k-400k
Bot: Thanks! When would you like to move?
[Within 3 months] [This year] [Just browsing]
User: Within 3 months
Bot: Perfect. Elif from our sales team will message you here shortly.
Hot leads go straight to a salesperson with the answers attached. “Just browsing” leads get a useful link and a gentle question instead of a sales call.
2. Product ad to purchase in the chat
For e-commerce, confirm the variant, check stock and send the checkout or payment link while the person is still in the thread. Every extra step outside the chat loses buyers.
3. Offer ad to booking with a human confirmation
For salons, clinics and studios, let an AI assistant answer questions about the offer, then hand the conversation to the front desk to confirm a time. Our guide to AI-to-human handoff covers how to pass context so the customer never repeats themselves.
Meta rules that apply after the tap
The ad brings the person in, but the conversation follows Meta’s messaging policy. As of October 2026:
- 24-hour window. Meta’s policy lists “clicks on a Click-to-Messenger ad and then starts a conversation” as one of the actions that open the standard messaging window. Inside it you can send any policy-compliant message, including promotions. Each new message from the person restarts the 24 hours. Instagram DMs work the same way.
- Human agent tag. After the window, a person on your team can still reply manually within 7 days. It can’t be used for bots or promotions.
- Bots must answer fast. Meta requires automated Messenger experiences to respond to user input within 30 seconds.
- Disclose automation where the law requires it: at the start, after a long gap and when moving from a person back to a bot.
- Message tags are not a workaround. Several tags stopped working in April 2026; see our guide to the Messenger 24-hour rule and message tags.
Following up with ad leads later
On Messenger, there is a built-in way to keep in touch with ad leads. Meta’s Marketing Messages on Messenger documentation says people who click and respond to Click-to-Messenger ads are automatically subscribed to the Page’s marketing messages, with no additional opt-in flow. You can then send them promotions outside the 24-hour window, up to one per person per day, billed by Meta per delivered message. These messages can’t be delivered to people in the EU, UK, Japan, South Korea or Australia. Our guide to Messenger marketing messages explains the details.
Marketing Messages on Messenger is a Messenger product. On Instagram, the usual pattern is to ask during the DM for permission to follow up on another channel, such as WhatsApp, and record that consent.
How to measure Click-to-Messenger and click-to-DM ads
Ads Manager tells you what happened before the chat: reach, clicks, cost and messaging metrics such as messaging conversations started. It doesn’t know whether the conversation turned into a sale. To close that gap, you need the referral data.
When a chat starts from an ad, Meta includes a referral object with the message. For both Messenger and Instagram it carries:
source: ADSandtype: OPEN_THREAD- the
ad_id(on Messenger) ads_context_data, with the ad title and the photo or video the person saw- your
refvalue, if you set one on the ad
Store that on the contact and you can report the full funnel per ad:
| Stage | Where it comes from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Spend, impressions, clicks | Ads Manager | Cost to start a conversation |
| Conversations started | Referral data in your inbox | Which ads actually start chats |
| Qualified leads | Tags or fields set by your flow | Which ads bring the right people |
| Sales or bookings | Your inbox, payments or CRM | Which ads make money |
| Response time | Inbox analytics | Whether slow replies are wasting budget |
The most useful number is usually cost per qualified conversation, not cost per message. An ad that starts fewer chats but with buyers who answer all three qualifying questions often beats a cheap ad that attracts “hi” messages.
How to run Click-to-Messenger and click-to-DM ads with MonoChat
MonoChat handles everything after the tap. Messenger and Instagram conversations arrive in the same shared team inbox as WhatsApp, TikTok and web chat, and replies go out from your own Page and Instagram identity.
- Connect your channels. Sign up at app.monochat.ai and connect the Facebook Page your ads run from, and your Instagram professional account linked to it. The free Basic plan includes one agent and one channel, enough to test one ad flow end to end.
- Build the entry flow. In the no-code workflow builder, create the welcome reply, buttons and keyword replies that match the suggested questions in your ad, so each tap starts the right path. Add conditions, delays and tags as needed.
- Add an AI assistant for open questions. An AI assistant answers free-text questions about prices, delivery or opening hours from your own content, and hands over to a person when needed.
- Tag and route. Ad-originated conversations are identified and tagged by campaign. Qualifying questions score intent, hot leads are assigned to sales with the full chat history, and others get a follow-up flow.
- Close in the chat. On Instagram, share payment links inside the DM so the customer can buy without leaving the conversation.
- Create the ad in Ads Manager. Choose Messenger or Instagram Direct as the destination, and match the greeting and questions to your flow.
See which ads start conversations
The Ads Referral Report app reads the referral data Meta sends with ad-originated messages and shows which ads start chats: messages per ad by ID and headline, a daily trend, and a breakdown by channel across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger and each of your accounts. You can filter by date, ad and channel, then match the ad ID with Ads Manager to see the campaign. Only messages that arrive with Meta’s ad or post referral data are counted.
If you also run Lead Ads with instant forms, the Lead Ads Follow-up app follows up the people who fill them with WhatsApp templates at the time you choose, and stops the remaining steps when they reply.
For conversion and team metrics, MonoChat analytics tracks the funnel from ad to conversation, qualified lead and sale, along with response times and agent workload. The Click-to-Messenger ads and Instagram click-to-DM ads pages show sample flows by industry, and pricing lists the plans.
Key takeaways
- Click-to-Messenger and click-to-DM ads open a chat instead of a website; you build them in Meta Ads Manager.
- Write suggested questions as the main reasons people buy, and give each one its own flow.
- The ad conversation opens a 24-hour window; a person can reply manually for 7 days with the human agent tag.
- Messenger ad responders are automatically subscribed to marketing messages, which gives you a compliant way to follow up later.
- Use the referral data Meta sends with the first message to measure cost per qualified conversation, not just cost per click.
