WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery sends a shopper a reminder, usually with a cart summary and a checkout link, after they leave items without paying. It runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform with an approved template, and Meta classes it as a marketing message, so it needs marketing opt-in. Order updates, such as confirmations and shipping notices, are utility messages and are what stop “where is my order?” chats before they start.
Both journeys use the same ingredients: consent collected at the right moment, templates approved by Meta, triggers from your store, and a person ready when a shopper replies. This guide covers the rules, timing, copy-ready templates, costs, and how to measure the results.
Abandoned cart vs order updates: how Meta treats them
The first thing to get right is the template category, because it decides who you can message, what you pay and how strict Meta is with the content.
| Abandoned cart reminder | Order update | |
|---|---|---|
| Meta category | Marketing | Utility |
| Consent needed | Opt-in to marketing messages | Opt-in to order updates |
| Can include an offer | Yes | No, an offer turns it into marketing |
| Per-user frequency limits | Apply (outside EEA, UK, Japan, South Korea) | Do not apply |
| US phone numbers | Not currently delivered | Delivered |
| Typical cost | Marketing rate of the recipient’s country | Utility rate, much lower in most countries |
Meta’s template categorization guide lists a reminder about items left in a cart as an example of marketing, and states that such retargeting messages are marketing even if the user asked for them. Order confirmations and “your package is on its way” messages are listed as utility. A template that mixes the two, such as an order update with a promo code, is categorized as marketing.
What you need before you start
- A WhatsApp Business Platform account. The WhatsApp Business app cannot trigger messages from your store. See how to get the WhatsApp Business API.
- Opt-in at checkout. Two separate, unticked checkboxes work best: one for order updates, one for offers and reminders. Our WhatsApp opt-in guide has wording you can copy.
- Store events. Cart created, cart abandoned, order placed, shipped, out for delivery, delivered. These come from your e-commerce platform through an integration or webhooks.
- Approved templates for each message you send outside a 24-hour customer service window.
A practical point: cart abandonment usually happens before checkout is complete, so you can only remind shoppers whose phone number and consent you already have, such as logged-in customers or those who entered their number early in checkout.
How to set up WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery
Step 1: Define “abandoned”
Pick a delay after the last cart activity, such as one hour, and exclude anyone who completed an order on any channel in the meantime.
Step 2: Plan a short sequence
A common shape is two or three messages, stopping as soon as the order is placed:
| Message | Timing (example) | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Reminder | A few hours after abandonment | Bring the cart back with a link |
| 2. Help | The next day | Remove doubts: delivery, sizes, payment |
| 3. Incentive (optional) | A day or two later | A conditional offer for high-value carts or a segment |
Do not give every shopper a discount by default. People who would have bought anyway learn to wait for the code. If you want to go deeper on sequences, see our guide to WhatsApp drip campaigns.
Step 3: Write the templates
First reminder (marketing)
Hi {{1}}, you left something in your cart at Nova Shop: {{2}}.
We've saved it for you.
[Complete order] [I have a question]
Help message (marketing)
Still thinking about your {{1}}? Delivery takes 2–3 working days and returns are free within 30 days. Reply here if you have a question about sizes or payment.
[Return to cart] [Stop reminders]
Conditional offer (marketing)
Your cart is still waiting, {{1}}. Use code {{2}} for free delivery on this order until {{3}}.
[Complete order] [Stop promotions]
Each one names the business, includes a clear action and gives a way to opt out. Variables keep them personal without making every message unique. More samples are in WhatsApp template message examples.
Step 4: Handle replies like a sales chat
The “I have a question” button is often more valuable than the checkout button. When a shopper replies, the 24-hour customer service window opens and you can answer freely: delivery times, size checks, payment problems. Route high-value carts to a person quickly.
How to cut “where is my order” chats with proactive updates
“Where is my order?” (often shortened to WISMO) is one of the most frequent e-commerce support questions. The fix is to answer it before the customer asks.
The core order update sequence
Order confirmed
Thanks, {{1}}! Your order {{2}} is confirmed. We'll message you when it ships.
Shipped
Good news: order {{1}} has shipped with {{2}}. Track it here: {{3}}
Out for delivery
Order {{1}} is out for delivery today. Need to change something? Reply here.
Delivered
Order {{1}} was delivered. Everything OK?
[All good] [There is a problem]
Keep these free of promotions so they stay in the utility category. Also send exception messages, because those prevent the angriest chats:
Delay notice
Sorry, {{1}}: order {{2}} is delayed by the carrier. The new estimated delivery date is {{3}}. Reply here if you need help.
Let customers self-serve the rest
Some customers will still ask. An assistant connected to your store can find the order by phone number, email or order ID, share the current status, and start a return or exchange with your policy rules. Anything unusual, such as a lost parcel or a damaged item, goes to a person with the order details attached.
What WhatsApp cart and order messages cost
WhatsApp charges per delivered template message, by category and the recipient’s country. The examples below use Meta’s rate card effective October 1, 2026, as used in our bulk messaging calculator, in USD per delivered message.
| Country | Marketing | Utility |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 0.0635 | 0.022 |
| Germany | 0.1365 | 0.055 |
| Brazil | 0.0625 | 0.0068 |
| India | 0.0118 | 0.0014 |
| Turkey | 0.0109 | 0.0009 |
Example: cart recovery in the UK. You send 1,000 first reminders and 600 second reminders in a month (the rest bought or opted out). That is 1,600 marketing messages × $0.0635 = $101.60, if all are delivered.
Example: order updates in India. 5,000 orders, each with confirmation, shipped and delivered updates, is 15,000 utility templates × $0.0014 = $21.
How Meta prices messages sent inside an open customer service window, and volume tiers that lower utility rates for large senders, also affect your bill. Check the latest details in our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide before you budget.
Rules and pitfalls to avoid
- Don’t sneak offers into order updates. Meta can recategorize a utility template as marketing, normally with one day’s notice.
- Don’t send cart reminders to US numbers. Marketing templates are not currently delivered there; use email or SMS for those shoppers. See SMS vs WhatsApp.
- Respect per-user marketing limits. If a reminder fails with error 131049, wait at least 24 hours before trying that person again, and don’t retry in a loop.
- Stop on purchase. Nothing annoys a customer more than a cart reminder after they paid.
- Honor every opt-out, whether it comes from a button, a typed “stop” or an email.
- Plan for seasonal peaks. Order volume and cart abandonment both spike around sales events. See our guide to Black Friday WhatsApp campaigns.
How to measure results
Track these per sequence step, not just in total:
- Recovery rate: recovered carts divided by carts that received a reminder
- Recovered revenue, attributed to the message that preceded the order
- Reply rate and the most common questions, which point to checkout friction
- Opt-out and block rate, an early warning that timing or copy is off
- WISMO volume in support before and after proactive updates
How to run cart recovery and order updates in MonoChat
MonoChat connects your store events to WhatsApp conversations your team and AI can both work in.
Cart recovery. With WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery, a cart event starts a workflow that waits for your delay window, then sends a template with a personalized cart summary and a checkout link. You set first, second and third reminders, do-not-disturb rules and conditional offers (for example a coupon only on a later reminder, or only for a VIP segment), and the sequence stops on purchase. If the shopper replies, the AI assistant answers delivery, payment and size questions or hands over to an agent. You track recovery rate, revenue attribution and drop-off reasons.
Order updates and WISMO. The order status and returns assistant finds orders by phone, email or order ID, shares delivery status, sends shipping, delay and delivery notifications, and runs return, exchange and refund-status flows with your policy rules. Complex cases go to an agent with full context.
Store connections. Shopify chat automation syncs products, variants and order data, and other stores can connect through webhooks and custom functions. If your own backend should send order templates directly, the WhatsApp Template API app sends an approved template with one API call, and the customer’s reply lands in the MonoChat inbox.
A ready-made shop desk. The Shop Assistant app connects to Shopify (products, orders and abandoned checkouts come in by themselves every 30 minutes) or to any other platform through its HTTP API or a CSV import. It sends up to three cart reminders with a Complete my order button that opens the same checkout, only to customers who agreed to marketing messages or wrote to you recently, answers “Where is my order?” with the tracking link, and handles return requests in the chat.
Physical stores too. If you also sell in shops, the Store Assistant app answers “Where is my order?” by order number or phone, sends shipped, out for delivery, delivered and cancelled messages, and takes click & collect reservations with stock per store. Orders can come from your web shop, ERP or till through its HTTP API.
Templates and journeys. You create and submit template messages for approval inside MonoChat, and build sequences with delays, branches and handover in workflow automation.
You can try it on the free Basic plan (one agent, one channel) at app.monochat.ai, and compare plans on the pricing page.
