TikTok Business Messaging: How to Reply to and Automate TikTok DMs
What TikTok business accounts can do with direct messages, the rules of the Business Messaging API, and how to automate replies without losing the human touch.

TikTok business messaging lets a business account receive and answer direct messages from people who found it on TikTok, through the TikTok app, TikTok Business Center or a connected platform using TikTok’s Business Messaging API. You can automate the first touch with a welcome message, keyword replies, suggested questions and chat prompts, and use a team inbox so several people can answer quickly.
The rules are different from Instagram and Messenger: TikTok uses 48-hour windows and message counts rather than a single 24-hour limit. This guide explains what’s available, the limits you must respect, ready-to-use reply examples, and how to run TikTok DMs alongside your other channels.
What is TikTok business messaging?
Every TikTok account can send DMs, but business messaging adds tools built for companies:
- Automatic messages set up in the TikTok app or Business Center.
- The Business Messaging API, which lets approved third-party platforms receive DMs through webhooks and reply on the business’s behalf.
- Messaging ads, which send people from an ad straight into a conversation.
TikTok describes the API as a way to connect organic and paid activity: someone who discovers you from a video or an ad lands in a conversation your team, or your automation, can handle in real time.
Who can use it?
- Business accounts only. The Business Messaging API supports business accounts and Registered Business Accounts (business accounts verified with additional business details). Personal accounts aren’t eligible, but you can switch to a business account in the TikTok app settings.
- Automatic messages in the app and Business Center are available to accounts with Advanced Access and Verified Business Accounts, not to general TikTok accounts.
- Region matters. TikTok says the API isn’t yet available for business accounts signed up in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK. For accounts signed up in the US, the platform you connect must have passed TikTok’s additional US data security review. The region is based on where the business account was signed up.
TikTok DM rules and messaging limits
These limits come from TikTok’s Business Messaging API documentation and apply to a business account’s non-mutual follow conversations handled through the API.
| Situation | What you can send |
|---|---|
| User sends the first message | Up to 10 messages within the next 48 hours |
| User replies to you | Unlimited messages for 48 hours after each reply |
| More than 48 hours since the user’s last reply | A maximum of three more messages, until the user writes again |
Two more rules matter:
- No cold outreach. You may not start a conversation with, or message, a TikTok user who hasn’t started a conversation with you.
- TikTok Shop is separate. TikTok Shop messages are a different messaging system and aren’t managed through the Business Messaging API.
In practice, the three “extra” messages after 48 hours are valuable. Use them for things the customer is waiting for, such as an answer you promised or a shipping update, and not for repeated sales pitches.
What message types can you send?
Through the API, a business can send:
- Text and image messages (image sharing isn’t available in every market).
- Q&A button cards: a question with answer buttons. The tapped answer is posted in the chat on the user’s behalf.
- Q&A text link cards: a question with tappable text links as answers.
- TikTok post messages, to share a video in the chat.
- Typing indicators and read receipts.
TikTok automatic messages: welcome, keywords, questions, prompts
TikTok offers four types of automatic messages. You can set them up in the TikTok app (Profile, menu, Business suite, Message center), in Business Center, or through a connected platform via the API.
| Feature | What it does | Limits from TikTok’s documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome message | Greets people who message you for the first time | Up to 250 characters in the app; one custom welcome message per account via the API |
| Keyword reply | Sends a set reply when a message exactly matches your keyword | Keywords up to 40 characters, replies up to 500 characters (app) |
| Suggested questions | FAQs shown at the start of a chat; tapping one sends a preset answer | Questions up to 80 characters, answers up to 200 (app); up to three per account via the API |
| Chat prompts | Topic buttons above the input box that start a conversation | Up to six per account via the API |
To use them in the app, the setting “Receive messages from Everyone” must be on. Each message goes through moderation review: TikTok says app submissions get a decision within 1 to 5 business days, and via the API reviews usually take from a few seconds to 2 or 3 hours. You can’t edit a message while it’s under review.
Example automatic messages
Welcome message
Hi! Thanks for messaging Nova Store. Ask us about sizes, delivery or returns,
and a team member will reply here. Usually within an hour.
Keyword reply for “price”
Our prices start at $29. Tell us which product you saw in the video
and we'll send the exact price and available sizes.
Suggested questions
- Do you ship to my city?
- How do returns work?
- Is this item in stock?
Chat prompts
- Track my order
- Product advice
- Talk to the team
Note that keyword replies trigger on an exact match. Customers type in many ways (“how much”, “price?”, “cost”), so treat keyword replies as a safety net, and use a flow or an AI assistant to understand everything else.
How to reply to TikTok DMs faster
TikTok’s own best-practice guidance for messaging ads notes that prospects are more likely to continue a conversation if they receive a reply within 3 minutes. A few habits help you get close:
- Automate the first reply. A welcome message or a flow confirms you’ve seen the message and asks the first useful question.
- Ask for what you need up front. City, size, order number or budget. Q&A button cards make this one tap.
- Route by topic. Sales questions go to sales, order problems to support.
- Set expectations after hours. Tell people when the team is back, rather than leaving them waiting silently.
- Use the 48-hour windows wisely. End messages with a question so the customer replies and reopens unlimited messaging.
- Keep answers in one place. Prices, return policy and delivery times should be the same in DMs, comments and your website.
Example DM conversation
Customer: Hi! How much is the linen set from your video?
Business: Hi! The linen set is $64. Which size do you need?
[S] [M] [L]
Customer: M
Business: M is in stock. Where should we deliver?
Customer: Austin
Business: We deliver to Austin in 2–3 days. Here's your checkout link: [link]

How to manage TikTok DMs in MonoChat
MonoChat is a TikTok Business Partner, so you can manage TikTok messages in the same inbox as WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram and web chat. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- One team inbox. TikTok DMs land in the shared team inbox with assignment, tags, SLA tracking and the customer’s history across channels, so nobody answers the same question twice.
- Routing. Route DMs by intent, keywords, tags or business rules to the right team or queue, and track response times.
- AI replies with handoff. An AI assistant answers common questions, collects details such as city, size or budget, and hands over to an agent when needed.
- Workflows. In the no-code workflow builder, build journeys with branching questions, wait steps and follow-ups, and trigger actions such as creating a CRM lead, opening a ticket or booking an appointment.
- Reporting. Track response time, reply rate, resolution and agent performance in analytics.
To get started, sign up at app.monochat.ai (the free Basic plan includes one agent and one channel) and connect your TikTok business account. The TikTok platform page has the connection steps and supported features, and pricing lists the paid plans. Keep TikTok’s regional availability in mind: accounts signed up in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK can’t use the Business Messaging API yet.
For reply wording you can adapt to TikTok, our Instagram DM templates and quick replies work well with small changes.
Key takeaways
- TikTok business messaging is for business accounts; personal accounts must switch first.
- You can’t message users first. After their first message you can send up to 10 messages in 48 hours, unlimited for 48 hours after each reply, then three more until they write again.
- Welcome messages, keyword replies, suggested questions and chat prompts automate the first touch; each one is reviewed before it goes live.
- The Business Messaging API isn’t available for accounts signed up in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, and TikTok Shop messages are separate.
- Reply fast, route well and keep TikTok in the same inbox as your other channels.
