How to Ask for Google Reviews on WhatsApp Without Getting Them Removed
A WhatsApp message with your review link gets more reviews than a sign at the till, but Google deletes reviews that were bought, gated or pushed. Here is the allowed way to ask, the template, the timing and the cost.

To ask for Google reviews on WhatsApp, send each customer one short message a couple of hours after the visit, with your Google review link for the branch they visited, in their language, and let them stop in one tap. Send it to every customer, offer nothing in return and never ask for a particular rating. That is the version Google accepts, and it works: the message arrives where the customer already chats, and the link opens the review form in two taps.
This guide explains what Google removes, how to word the message, which WhatsApp rules apply, what 1,000 requests cost and how to automate it with MonoChat.
Why WhatsApp works for review requests
A sign at the till or a card in the bag reaches a customer who is already walking out. A message reaches them when they are sitting down, with the visit fresh in mind.
- The link is one tap. The customer needs a Google account, as Google notes, but they do not have to search for your listing.
- It is a conversation, not a mailing. If something went wrong, the customer can answer your message and your team can fix it.
- It fits multi-branch businesses. Each location has its own review link, so the right branch gets the review.
What Google does not allow
Google’s user-contributed content policy for Maps is clear about where asking turns into manipulation. These rules apply to every channel, WhatsApp included.
- No rewards. Payment, discounts or free goods and services in exchange for a review, for changing one or for removing a negative one are incentivized reviews, and they are removed.
- No gating. Discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones is not allowed. Do not route only happy customers to the Google link.
- No pressure. Merchants should not require or pressure customers to leave ratings or reviews while they are on the premises, and should not ask staff to collect a quota of reviews.
- Genuine experience only. Asking for content that represents a real experience is allowed.
The practical rule: send the same message to everyone who visited, and ask for an honest review, not a good one.
The message: a template that follows the rules
After the 24-hour customer service window closes, WhatsApp only delivers approved template messages. A review request is almost always approved as marketing, because its purpose is promotional for your business. See our template message examples for how Meta categorizes content.
Hi {{1}}, thank you for visiting {{2}}. If you have a minute, we would value your honest review on Google.
[Leave a review] [Had a problem?] [Stop messages]
Why it is built this way:
- The link button goes to everyone. No score first, no filter.
- “Had a problem?” sits next to the link, not instead of it. An unhappy customer can reach your team and still leave a public review if they choose.
- No offer and no rating in the text. Never “five stars” and never “get 10% off”.
- A Stop button. Marketing templates need an easy way out.
If the customer wrote to you in the last 24 hours, a free-form message with the same content can go instead of a template.
Timing and frequency
| Rule | Sensible default |
|---|---|
| Wait after the visit | About 2 hours, so the customer has left |
| Quiet hours | Not at night, and not on the days your customers rest |
| One request per customer | Not again for at least 90 days |
| Reminder | At most one, a few days later |
| Opt-out | One tap, honored at once, and never asked again |
WhatsApp rules to follow
- Consent first. WhatsApp’s Business Messaging Policy lets you message people who gave you their number and agreed to receive messages from you. Collect that at booking or checkout; see the WhatsApp opt-in guide.
- Honor every opt-out. A customer who replies “stop” should never get a request again.
- US numbers. Meta’s documentation says WhatsApp does not currently deliver marketing templates to US phone numbers, so for US customers use another channel such as SMS.
What 1,000 review requests cost
Meta charges per delivered marketing template, by the customer’s country. With the October 2026 rates in our bulk messaging calculator:
| Market | Per request | 1,000 requests |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | $0.0635 | $63.50 |
| Spain | $0.0707 | $70.70 |
| Brazil | $0.0625 | $62.50 |
| Turkey | $0.0109 | $10.90 |
A free-form request inside an open window is charged at the market’s utility rate since October 1, 2026, which is cheaper. Compare the total with what one new customer is worth to you; the full rules are in our WhatsApp Business API pricing guide.
Automate it with MonoChat
MonoChat is an official Meta Business Partner, and its Google Review Requests app does the steps above for restaurants, clinics, salons, shops and any business with one or more branches. It is not made or endorsed by Google.
- Install the app in your workspace. Sample data lets you see every screen first.
- Add each branch with its Google Place ID or review link, its languages and the channel to send from, and use “Test the link” before anything goes out.
- Prepare the WhatsApp template. A ready template comes in every language; send it for approval from the app or copy it into WhatsApp Manager.
- Send your customers. Your CRM or POS calls a simple API (one customer or up to 500 at once, with branch, language, visit time and your own id so nothing is sent twice), or you upload a CSV, turn on a MonoChat trigger such as a closed conversation or a received payment, or your team presses “Send review request” beside a conversation.
What the app does for you:
- Fair asking. Every customer gets the link, there is no reward field and it never asks for five stars. “Had a problem?” reaches your team with a tag, a note and an event for your flows.
- Respectful timing. It waits after the visit (2 hours by default), skips quiet hours and chosen days, sends one request per customer in 90 days, and one optional reminder.
- Easy to stop. The Stop button or a reply such as STOP opts the customer out for good.
- Every channel. WhatsApp, plus Instagram, Messenger, web chat and Telegram while the channel allows it, and SMS from your SMS number.
- Test mode. Nothing reaches customers; each request is written as a note in the conversation showing what would go.
- Reports. Requests sent, read and answered, and with your own Google Places API key, each branch’s rating and review count day by day.
