ChatGPT on WhatsApp in 2026: What Changed and How Businesses Use It
OpenAI's own ChatGPT number stopped working on WhatsApp in January 2026. Businesses can still use OpenAI's models, the technology behind ChatGPT, to answer their own customers on WhatsApp. Here is what changed, what is allowed and how to set it up.

For about a year, anyone could message ChatGPT on WhatsApp by saving OpenAI’s number, 1-800-ChatGPT. That ended on January 15, 2026. OpenAI said the change came from “a policy and terms change from WhatsApp”, which now stops AI providers from offering a general-purpose AI assistant as their product on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
That rule does not stop businesses from using AI. A clinic, a store or a hotel can still use OpenAI’s models, the same technology behind ChatGPT, to answer its own customers on its own WhatsApp number. This guide explains what changed, what is allowed, and how a business sets up its own ChatGPT-style assistant on WhatsApp.
What happened to ChatGPT on WhatsApp
OpenAI announced in October 2025 that ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026. According to OpenAI, more than 50 million people had used ChatGPT on WhatsApp. It asked users to link their ChatGPT account from the 1-800-ChatGPT contact profile to keep their history, because WhatsApp does not support exporting chats, and to continue in the ChatGPT apps for Android, iOS and desktop, or on the web.
The reason is a change to WhatsApp’s Business Solution Terms. Since January 15, 2026, “AI Providers”, meaning companies whose main product is AI such as a large language model or a general-purpose assistant, may not use the WhatsApp Business Platform to offer that AI as the primary functionality, except for users in markets where Meta is legally required to allow it. Our article on the WhatsApp AI chatbot policy for 2026 covers the rule in detail.
Can a business still use ChatGPT on WhatsApp?
Yes. The restriction is about AI as the product. When AI helps a business serve its own customers, it is incidental to the business’s service, and that stays allowed.
| OpenAI’s ChatGPT number (ended) | Your business’s AI assistant on WhatsApp | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | OpenAI | Your business, on your own WhatsApp number |
| What people ask | Anything | Questions about your products, services, orders and bookings |
| What it knows | General knowledge | Your website, policies, catalog and FAQs |
| Status under WhatsApp’s 2026 terms | Restricted as a general-purpose assistant | Allowed, following the normal messaging rules |
| Who pays for the AI | OpenAI | You, through an OpenAI API key or your platform’s AI |
So “ChatGPT on WhatsApp” for a business means an AI agent built on an OpenAI model (or another model) that answers on your number, about your business, and hands over to your team when needed.
How a ChatGPT-style assistant on WhatsApp works
- Your WhatsApp number on the Cloud API. The assistant needs your number connected to Meta’s WhatsApp Cloud API. You can keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the same number with Coexistence. Our WhatsApp Cloud API guide explains the setup.
- A model. You choose an AI model, for example one of OpenAI’s GPT models, and connect it with an API key, or use the AI your software provides.
- Your knowledge. The assistant answers from your own content: website pages, documents, product lists and FAQs. This is what keeps it on topic and accurate. See our guide to an AI agent knowledge base.
- Tools. To do more than answer, the assistant calls your systems: check an order, look up stock, book a slot or create a lead.
- Handover. When a customer asks for a person, or the assistant is not sure, the chat moves to your team in the same inbox. Our AI to human handoff guide covers when to hand over.
What it costs
- AI usage. With your own OpenAI API key, OpenAI bills you per token, at the prices on its pricing page. A ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription does not cover API usage.
- WhatsApp messages. Replies within 24 hours of the customer’s last message are service messages. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges them at the market’s utility rate after a free tier of 1,000 a month per business phone number. Templates you send first, such as reminders, are charged per message. The bulk messaging calculator estimates the total.
- Software. The platform that connects WhatsApp, the model and your team has its own price.

Set it up in five steps
- Connect your WhatsApp number to the Cloud API through Meta’s sign-up flow in your software.
- Pick your model. Add your OpenAI API key, or another provider’s, or use built-in AI.
- Teach it your business. Add your website, documents and FAQs, and write short instructions: what it should help with, how it should sound, and what it must never promise.
- Set the handover. Decide which topics and requests go to a person, and in which hours.
- Test before going live. Ask the questions your customers really ask, including the awkward ones. Our checklist on testing an AI agent before launch helps.
Keep it within WhatsApp’s rules
- Stay on your business. Answer about your products, services, orders and bookings. A number that invites people to “ask anything” looks like a general-purpose assistant.
- Get opt-in before you message first. Customers who write to you can be answered; templates you send first need their consent. See WhatsApp opt-in.
- Offer a person. Make it easy to reach your team.
- Protect customer data. Choose providers and settings that fit your privacy obligations. Our article on AI chatbot data privacy lists what to check.
Running it with MonoChat
MonoChat is business messaging software and an official Meta Business Partner. It connects your own WhatsApp number directly to Meta’s Cloud API and runs AI agents on the model you choose.
- Start from an app. MonoChat Start reads your website and builds your assistant’s knowledge base in about two minutes, then answers on WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram or your website chat. Assistants for industries such as salons, clinics, real estate and online stores come with their tools ready, from the MonoChat Store.
- Your model, no markup. Bring your own key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, DeepSeek or Ollama, or use MonoChat’s AI billed by usage. See custom LLMs.
- Tools and handover. AI function tools let the assistant check orders, book appointments and call your APIs, and the team inbox takes over when a person is needed.
