Meta’s AI for businesses on WhatsApp is now called Meta Business Agent. It answers customers in your WhatsApp chats in your tone, learns from your past chats, website and catalog, and hands complex conversations back to you. Small businesses switch it on in the WhatsApp Business app in a few minutes; enterprises configure it through Meta’s Business Agent APIs on the WhatsApp Business Platform. An AI agent platform does the same core job, but across many channels and numbers, with a team inbox, your own systems and your choice of AI model.

So the real question is not “Meta or a platform” in general, but which one fits how your business talks to customers today. This guide explains what Meta’s agent does according to Meta’s own pages, what it costs, where a platform adds value, and how to choose.

What is Meta Business Agent?

Meta announced Meta Business Agent on June 3, 2026, as AI that lets any business answer customers around the clock. It comes in two forms.

In the WhatsApp Business app. You open Tools, select Meta Business Agent, link your account and confirm. You teach it by letting it learn from past chats and by adding your website, catalog, price lists, FAQs, documents or photos. You can test it by chatting with it as a customer, rewrite answers it gave, flag topics it should avoid, choose whether it replies to everyone, only new customers or customers from ads, and step in at any time. Meta says no coding is required and that it is available to eligible businesses in select markets.

On the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). Enterprises configure the agent through the Meta Business Agent APIs:

  • Knowledge: business information, FAQs, files and websites the agent crawls.
  • Instructions: tone, priorities and the interactive components it may send.
  • Connectors: your own APIs, so the agent can check stock, look up an order or book an appointment.
  • Handoff and thread control: your app follows the conversation through standby webhooks and can take over at any time, then hand control back.
  • Testing and evaluation: free test messages and evaluation runs before you go live.
  • Budgets: caps on tokens or AI turns per rolling window; when a cap is reached, the agent hands the conversation to a person.

The agent detects the customer’s language and replies in it. Meta notes that English has the strongest response quality.

What Meta’s agent does well

Be fair to it: for many small businesses it is the fastest path to an always-on WhatsApp assistant.

  • Zero setup friction. It lives in the app you already use. No integration project, no developer.
  • Learns from what you already have. Past chats, your website and your catalog become its knowledge.
  • You stay in control on your phone. Take over any chat, set topics it must transfer, and correct answers so it learns.
  • Native to Meta. It is built by the company that runs WhatsApp, so it works with click-to-WhatsApp ads and Meta’s own surfaces. Meta says it also runs on Messenger.
  • One bill on the API. Meta charges one per-token rate that covers both the AI and the message delivery.

If you are one owner or a small team, sell on WhatsApp only, and mostly answer the same questions about hours, prices and availability, Meta’s agent may be all you need.

Where an AI agent platform fits better

The picture changes as soon as customer conversations become a team operation. Here is where a dedicated platform usually earns its place.

NeedMeta Business AgentAI agent platform
ChannelsWhatsApp, and Messenger per MetaWhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, web chat, SMS and voice in one place
Team workYou step in from the app, or your own app takes control via APIShared team inbox with assignment, routing, notes and SLAs
KnowledgeChats, website, catalog, files, FAQsYour knowledge base plus retrieval, vector stores and live lookups
ActionsConnectors to your APIs (API version)Function tools, MCP servers, CRM and e-commerce integrations, workflows
AI modelMeta’s modelYour choice of provider and model, or your own agent
Industry coverageSeveral verticals not supported on the APIDepends on the platform and WhatsApp’s general policies
VoiceNot described on Meta’s agent pagesWhatsApp calls and phone lines with AI voice, if the platform offers it
Cost modelPer token, set by MetaPlatform plan plus your AI usage and Meta’s message fees

A few of these are worth expanding.

More than one channel

Customers do not stay on WhatsApp. If half your messages arrive on Instagram and your website chat, you want one assistant, one knowledge base and one inbox across all of them, instead of training separate bots. See our guide to the omnichannel inbox.

A real handover, not just “the owner steps in”

Meta’s agent hands off when it detects low confidence, a policy problem or a customer asking for a person, and Meta notes that you do not configure those triggers on the API. A platform lets you define your own rules (refund requests, VIP customers, keywords, business hours) and route the conversation to the right team with the full history. Our AI-to-human handoff guide covers how to design this.

Your model, your agent, your data agreements

With Meta’s agent you use Meta’s model under Meta’s terms. Many teams want to pick the model per task, keep their existing OpenAI, Anthropic or Google contracts, run a self-hosted model, or bring an agent they built themselves. That needs a platform that accepts your own keys and agents.

Regulated or excluded industries

On the API, Meta lists Finance, Government, Health, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony services as unsupported verticals for Meta Business Agent. Clinics, insurers and lenders that want AI on WhatsApp therefore need another route, and should still follow WhatsApp’s general rules on AI use, covered in our WhatsApp AI chatbot policy guide.

What does each option cost?

Meta Business Agent in the app. Meta’s launch post says getting started is free and that access will move to paid subscription offerings. Its Meta One subscription for the WhatsApp Business app lists Meta Business Agent among its features. Meta does not publish the subscription price on those pages, so check in the app under Settings, Subscriptions.

Meta Business Agent on the API. Since August 1, 2026, Meta charges per token at one global rate of $2.00 per million tokens. Meta estimates about 20,000 to 25,000 tokens per message, or roughly 4 to 5 cents per message, and that single charge covers both the AI and message delivery. The 72-hour free entry point window from click-to-WhatsApp ads does not remove the token charge.

Your own AI on a platform. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges every non-template reply as a service message, at the same per-market rate as utility and authentication messages, with no volume tiers. On top of that you pay your AI provider for tokens and your platform plan. For an efficient model, the AI part is often a fraction of a cent per conversation, while the Meta fee depends on the country: in our bulk messaging calculator, based on Meta’s October 2026 rate card, a service message costs $0.0068 in Brazil and $0.022 in the United Kingdom.

Neither option is always cheaper. It depends on how many messages each answer takes, which countries your customers are in and which model you use. Our guides to AI chatbot cost and AI customer service pricing models walk through the math.

Can Meta’s agent and a platform work together?

Partly. Keep three rules in mind:

  1. One AI agent per number on the API. Meta’s eligibility rules say a number that already runs another AI agent integration cannot use Meta Business Agent. Pick one AI for each number.
  2. Your app can still sit beside Meta’s agent. On the API, Meta’s agent is the primary responder, but your app receives standby webhooks and can take control of a thread, then release it. Whether your human team can work that way depends on your platform supporting Meta’s thread control.
  3. Different numbers, different tools. Some businesses use Meta’s agent on a small local number in the Business app and run a platform with their own AI on their main API number. That is a valid split, as long as each number has one clear owner.

How to choose: a quick checklist

Choose Meta Business Agent if most of these are true:

  • WhatsApp (and maybe Messenger) is your only customer channel.
  • One person or a small team answers from the app.
  • Your questions are mostly FAQs, prices, availability and product suggestions.
  • Your industry is supported and you are in an eligible market.
  • You are happy with Meta’s model and pricing.

Choose an AI agent platform if any of these are true:

  • You serve customers on several channels or numbers.
  • Several agents or teams share conversations and need assignment, SLAs and reporting.
  • The AI must take real actions in your CRM, store, booking or ticketing system.
  • You want to pick or switch AI models, use your own keys, or run your own agent.
  • You need voice calls next to chat.
  • Your vertical is not supported by Meta’s agent.

How MonoChat fits next to Meta Business AI

MonoChat is an official Meta Business Partner and a multichannel platform, so it covers the cases where Meta’s agent stops.

  • AI assistants on every channel. One AI assistant answers on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, web chat, SMS and voice, from your website, documents and FAQs in the AI knowledge base. When it cannot answer, the conversation moves to a person in the shared team inbox with the whole history.
  • Your model or your own agent. With custom LLMs you connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Groq, self-hosted models through Ollama and more, and route by cost, latency, capability or language with fallbacks. The Agent Harness runs the OpenAI Agents SDK, the Claude Agent SDK, hosted agents or your own endpoint built with LangGraph, Google ADK or CrewAI, with a budget per run. Bring your own AI key on every plan, and MonoChat adds no AI markup.
  • Actions in your systems. AI function tools, MCP integration and CRM integrations let the assistant look up orders, check availability and create records.
  • Voice next to chat. WhatsApp calls and voice over SIP bring calls into the same workspace, with AI voice agents that answer common questions and hand over to a person.
  • Keep the app with Coexistence. With WhatsApp Coexistence you keep using the WhatsApp Business app on your phone while your team, AI assistants and workflows work on the same number in MonoChat, with no number change.

Want an assistant built from your website in minutes? The CompanyAI app reads your site and answers customers on WhatsApp and your other channels from that knowledge, records requests as tasks and hands over to your team when needed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Meta Business AI on WhatsApp?

Meta's AI for businesses on WhatsApp is now called Meta Business Agent. It replies to customers in your chats, answers questions about your business and products, collects details and hands complex cases to you. Small businesses set it up in the WhatsApp Business app; larger businesses can configure it on the WhatsApp Business Platform through Meta's Business Agent APIs.

Is Meta Business Agent free?

In the WhatsApp Business app, Meta says getting started is free and that access will move to paid subscription offerings; its Meta One subscription for the app lists Meta Business Agent among its features. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta has charged for Meta Business Agent messages since August 1, 2026, at one global rate of $2.00 per million tokens, which Meta estimates at about 4 to 5 cents per message.

Can I use Meta Business Agent and another AI chatbot on the same number?

Not as two AI agents at once on the API. Meta's eligibility rules say a number that already runs another AI agent integration cannot use Meta Business Agent. You can still connect your own app to follow conversations and take over from the agent through Meta's standby webhooks and thread control.

Which businesses cannot use Meta Business Agent?

On the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta lists Finance, Government, Health, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony services as unsupported verticals. The business must also be in an eligible country, in good standing and meet Meta's trust and verification requirements. In the app, Meta says the agent is available to eligible businesses in select markets.

When is an AI agent platform a better choice than Meta's agent?

When you need more than WhatsApp, several numbers or brands, a team inbox with assignment and SLAs, your own choice of AI model, deep connections to your CRM and order systems, voice calls, or analytics across channels. A platform is also the route if your industry is outside Meta's supported verticals.
